| General Information The Aaland Islands form an autonomous, demilitarised and unilingual Swedish province of Finland. They consist of some 6,500 islands with names, 6,400 of them being larger than 3,000 m2. The main Island covers 70% of the total area, and 90% of the population live there. It stretches 50 km from north to south and 45 km from east to west. The Islands have over 900 km of public roads. Aaland consists of 15 districts and one town, Mariehamn. Mariehamn has 10,000 inhabitants, 40% of the total population of 25,000 (1995). |
