HELPlite

In an emergency, the user first calls for assistance then simply presses the HELPlite against a window facing the road and turns on the switch. The strobe light acts like a beacon signaling their location to the Police, Ambulance or Fire Department, saving precious seconds in their arrival.

The intense light of the lamp makes the HELPlite visible during daylight hours, but especially visible after dark. It can be seen from thousands of feet away, while flashing 40 times per minute.

Outdoor applications include hikers, hunters, campers, snowmobilers, and boaters. In an emergency, the user simply flashes the HELPlite toward the rescue plane or helicopter.

HELPliteIan MacDonald, Canadian inventor of Helplite, (with associate Ross Jenkins) states that the idea for such an item was inspired by a letter he read in the Cape Breton Post's Letter to the Editor section.

MacDonald said the writer described a situation where a family member was in immediate need of emergency care so she called 911. The ambulance's sirens could be heard shortly after, but the vehicle passed by her home three times before locating it. In the letter she demanded that someone invent a beacon to help emergency vehicles find homes in desperate need of help.

MacDonald, an electronics engineering technologist at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, recognized his duty and created the HELPlite to save thousands of lives.
