Is Your Seafood Safe?
Maritime In Vitro Shellfish Test (MIST™)

Jellett Biotek Ltd. has developed innovative rapid tests for detecting marine biotoxins. In collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada a rapid test for paralytic shellfish poisoning was developed.
MIST Alert™ for PSP

Key benefits:
  • fast, accurate, yes/no results within 20 minutes
  • detects all toxin analogues
  • shelf life of 1 year
  • cost effective
  • user friendly
  • permanent record
  • durable for field work
  • eliminates animal use

The MIST Alert™ for PSP has the following possible applications:
  • pre-screening for toxins in regulatory labs
  • harvest management tool for aquaculturists/fisheries
  • beach monitoring
  • quality control tool for shellfish processors and quality managers
  • research applications
  • ensure safety of imported shellfish
  • phytoplankton monitoring

Test available for the following:
  • Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP)
  • Amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP)
  • Other tests are in development

Jellet Biotek

Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) is an acute, sometimes fatal form of food poisoning typically caused by eating bivalve molluscan shellfish (e.g. mussels, clams, oysters, scallops) that have become poisonous from ingesting certain marine dinoflagellates that contain the PSP toxins. Saxitoxin and its numerous analogs are responsible for PSP, and are among the most potent natural poisons known. A fatal oral dose for humans is only a few milligrams. Saxitoxin blocks the sodium channel of nerve membranes and thereby inhibits neuronal transmissions. Symptoms of PSP usually begin within 15-90 minutes after ingesting toxic shellfish and most often consist of parasthesia and numbness of the tongue, lips, and fingertips. If the dose is sufficient, this may be followed by loss of muscular coordination and, in advanced cases, ascending paralysis. Death may results from diaphragmatic paralysis and respiratory failure within 2 to 12 hours.
Jellett Biotek Limited (JBL) is a biotechnology company located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, that develops and manufactures diagnostic test kits to test for marine biotoxins. In collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada, Institute for Marine Biosciences, JBL recently achieved a technological breakthrough leading to the development of rapid screening tests for PSP.

JBL has also developed a rapid test for amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP or domoic acid). The new MIST Alert™ tests are qualitative (yes/no) tests that provide a visual determination of the presence of toxicity in shellfish samples in about 10 minutes. MIST Alert™ tests may be used in regulatory laboratories to screen shellfish samples, but are simple enough to be used in the field as a harvest management tool to determine a safe time to harvest and as a quality control tool in processing plants to ensure incoming shellfish are free of toxins.
JBL also offers consulting services in marine biology and provides testing for sea urchin diseases. We seek research collaborations for new product development.
