Preface by the Minister of Business and Industry

The Ministry of Business and Industry is the ministry for trade and industry and consumer affairs. The Ministry handles government duties relating to industry, trade, crafts, shipping, the financial sector, and consumers.

The Ministry consists of a ministry and seven agencies: the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority, the Competition Council, the Danish Commerce and Companies Agency, the Danish Patent Office, the National Consumer Agency of Denmark, the Danish Agency for Development of Trade and Industry and the Danish Maritime Authority.

The duties of the Ministry of Business and Industry are:

  • Assisting the Minister in industrial policy development and planning.
  • Supporting business development.
  • Promoting the growth potential and international competitiveness of Danish business enterprises.
  • Securing appropriate coherence between industrial requirements and national and international regulations.
  • Drafting bills and negotiating EU directives.
  • Co-ordinating industrial development policy initiatives - national as well as international.
  • Ensuring national influence on the EU's industrial, consumer and competition policies.<
  • Disseminating knowledge on business and consumer policies and affairs, for instance on patents, entrepreneurs and innovators, technological information, and consumer information.
  • Conducting supervision, particularly of the financial sector and of shipping.
  • Handling consumer interests in drafting national bills and EU regulations.
The duties of the Ministry of Business and Industry are thus manifold. The basic aim of the work of the ministry is that of providing a beneficial and non-restrictive environment for trade and industry and the best of terms for consumers, in Denmark and on an international scale. This is achieved particularly through close co-operation with industrial and consumer organisations.

The Ministry operates in a favourable industrial climate in Denmark. A climate of this kind is an important condition for the ability of Danish enterprises to compete in an economy assuming an increasingly international nature.

Mrs. Mimi Jakobsen
