Preface by the Minister of Transport

The Danish Ministry of Transport has its main responsibilities within the areas of transportation by road, railway and air, and also mail services. In the field of maritime transport, the ministry is mainly responsible for infrastructure, i.e. ports. In addition, the Ministry of Transport takes care of meteorological services and coast protection.

The Danish Ministry of Transport is organized in a central department with a number of directorates and administrations as well as public services companies attached. Among the public services companies the two largest are Post Denmark (mail service) and DSB (Danish State Railways), both having been recently restructured to meet demands for more competitiveness.

In recent years, transport policy in Denmark has been aimed at creating a balance between development and environmental protection based on the principle of sustainable growth. The framework for the transport policy has been outlined in the action plan "Trafik 2005" ("Transport 2005"). In this plan, environmental goals for the transport sector have been set out, aiming at stabilizing energy consumption and CO2-emissions by the year 2005 at the level of 1988, with a further reduction of 25% until 2030.

The Danish government has set out five main strategies in the effort of pursuing the goals for the transportsector:

  • Action aimed at changing the extent of transport performance and distribution by transport means.
  • Improvement of alternatives to car transport.
  • Reduction of pollution problems.
  • New strategies for traffic investments.
  • Strengthening of planning and research.
