During the 1860s, Tele Danmark laid the main lines of the Danish domestic telegraph network and established the first telegraph links from Denmark to other countries. In 1857, the first Danish submarine cable containing three copper wires was laid across the Great Belt - and in 1870, Denmark helped establish the first telegraph link between Japan and Europe via Siberia.

Today, Tele Danmark continues this pioneering tradition by building modern telecommunications networks beyond the borders of Denmark as well.

The Reliable Danish Infrastructure
The result of Tele Danmark's 150 years of telecommunications experience is the cost-effective Danish infrastructure, which is considered to be one of the most advanced and reliable networks in the world. Built to meet the needs of a modern consumer society, telephone penetration in Denmark is among the highest in the world; 60 lines per 100 inhabitants - and network availability is very high; more than 99% of all calls made during peak hours are completed on the first try.

Mobile Communications Expertise
Mobile communications technology is another area in which Tele Danmark has a great deal of expertise. The company was one of the original group of Nordic telecoms which developed the NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephone) system in the 1970s. Tele Danmark also participated in the development of the new pan-European GSM mobile system and Denmark was the first country in the world with nationwide GSM coverage. At present, GSM penetration in Denmark is among the highest in the world.

The Vision Goes On
This vision of linking worlds - with reliable, modern telecommunications networks - continues to be the driving force behind Tele Danmark. To achieve this goal, Tele Danmark is committed to joining alliances and working as an active partner to provide and operate the telecommunications systems and services of the future.

Active Partnership
It's not hard to understand that Tele Danmark's long-standing and comprehensive expertise in fiber optic land transmission systems, fixed networks and mobile communications systems makes the company a very attractive partner. And the company's strong commitment to partnership means that when Tele Danmark is involved, the emphasis is always on co-operation, flexibility and reliability.

Tele Danmark already has an outstanding record when it comes to exporting its telecommunications know-how. Recent projects include: GSM and NMT mobile networks in Hungary, Lithuania and the Ukraine, and a nationwide paging system in Germany.

The Far Eastern Connection
At present, Tele Danmark is doing feasibility studies with China UNICOM for several exciting projects in China. These include: Building and operating GSM and PSTN networks in Hubei province, installing a 3,200 land telecom cable along the Yangtze River from Shanghai to Chengdu, and providing paging services (with Telenor) for 500 million people in 13 Chinese provinces.

Additionally, Tele Danmark and China UNICOM are partners with Telenor and the Hysan Development Company Ltd. in Honeycomb, a consortium which is, at the moment, bidding for a PCS License in Hong Kong.

To signal the company's commitment to participate actively in the Far Eastern telecommunications arena, Tele Danmark opened its first regional office in Asia on July 12, 1995 in Hong Kong.

Active at Sea
Tele Danmark is very active when it comes to expanding the global telecom infrastructure at sea. Besides laying many of the major cable links in and around Northern Europe, Tele Danmark recently installed Link I of the new Malaysian submarine cable link. This 860-kilometer link in the South China Sea is the world's first 5 Gbit/s system which means it has much more transmission capacity than any other submarine cable in the world at the present time.
