|Bakkafrost has been a supplier of fish
products for more than 30 years. The main products have been pelagic fish such as herring
and mackerel. For the past 15 years Bakkafrost has also produced farmed salmon and salmon
trout , and supplied other species of fish, such as white halibut, black halibut and
monckfish in significant quantities.
In fish farming the environmental circumstances are one of the most important factors. The Gulf stream and the unpolluted waters around the Faroe Islands make superior conditions for fish farming.
Bakkafrost produce approximately 155 metric tons of salmon and salmon trout per annum at 3 different locations.
The salmon is smoked at Bakkafrost's own smoking plant and the company can supply all kinds of smoked fish products such as portions, slices, fillets and loins, all according to the customers requirements.
Bakkafrost produce first class products from pelagic fish which thrive in the waters around the Faroe Islands.
Herring and mackerel can be supplied as whole frozen, fillets, or they can be smoked, spiced, salted etc., although the main processing method is freezing. The season for mackerel fishing is from September to February and for herring fishing from January to March and from May to July.
