Fuglafjørður on Eysturoy welcomes you

Eysturoy, which is 268 km2, is the second largest of the Faroe Islands and has a population of 10,000. Eysturoy is connected to the island of Streymoy by a bridge. The island can also be reached by boat from the town of Klaksvík in the Northern Islands and from the capital, Tórshavn.

The island offers a wide range of attractions for visitors in the form of stunning natural landscapes, quaint peaceful villages, historical sites and modern well-functioning towns.

Hospitality has always been a matter of course in the Faroe Islands, and is also a matter of course in Fuglafjørður, where the past and the future go hand in hand, saying: "Without a past - no future!"

Visitors can experience how the "treasures of the sea" are being transformed into the finished export product through an advanced technological industry. Fuglafjørður is the town where 3% of the population on the Faroe Islands ship approximately 20% of the Faroese export value from modern and well-functioning harbour facilities.

However, this doesn't mean that Fuglafjørður is a stressful town, even though it plays a great part in the total exports of the Faroe Islands. On the contrary, it is a town where you can do your shopping and count on a friendly face and good service in the shops.

The municipality of Fuglafjørður consists of the town, Fuglafjørður, its suburb Kambsdalur, and the little village of Hellur, which faces the fjord Oyndarfjørður. Fuglafjørður is one of the few towns in the country with a population of over 1,500. The horseshoe-shaped fjord, which has the same name as the town, is surrounded by the characteristic mountains of Húsafelli (627 metres), Sléttafjall (626 metres), and Blábjørg (731 metres).

Fuglafjørður has a wide harbour area and good mooring space, a fishmeal factory, a fish filleting factory, cold-storage plants, trawl- and net-making, slips, mechanical workshops, and a large oil depot can also be found here. There is also a marina. The supply of everyday necessities and other wares is large. There is also a restaurant, bank, a library and a swimming pool. The new church was built in 1984 and is characteristic with its separate tower. Kambsdalur is characterized by the junior college and the business school as well as a sports hall and a cafeteria. The YMCA organisation has a club house in the area.

The visitor can get all the information he may need at the newly-established information office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every weekday throughout the tourist season.

Additionally, Fuglafjørður is a town where you can experience the old village culture, where the making of wool products was a central occupation. The landscape in and around Fuglafjørður is extremely beautiful and it has a lot of variety. It is possible to go on several "easy" walking tours in the mountains on old paths, where cairns from the past still show the way to the neighbouring village. And from there the distance is short to the "Rocking Stones" ("Rinkusteinar"), whose eternal movement has been a mystery for hundreds of years.

In the mountain-landscape west of the town on a beautiful hill there is a place of refuge, "Uppi í Húsi", where the inhabitants of "Fuglafjørður" tried to hide in the old days when the town was ravaged by pirates. The remains of a very spartan house can still be found here if only you grant yourself the experience of a beautiful walking tour.

Half-way between Norðragøta and Kambsdalur there is a side road - the old route to Leirvík. One kilometre from the road, close to the shore of Fuglafjørður, the only hot spring in the Faroe Islands can be seen. It has a temperature of approximately 18°C all year round. Regional bus number 400 takes 1 hour to travel from Fuglafjørður via Leirvík to Tórshavn. In Fuglafjørður there is a tourist and information office which arranges hiking tours and sight-seeing trips by boat. Weekend cottages can be rented in Fuglafjørður, as can the scout hut in the middle of the town. In Kambsdalur there is a youth hostel in the YMCA building as well as a camping site for tents and caravans.

The information centre is in the town's library, where the visitor has access to material about the Faroe Islands both in books and brochures.
