The firm was established in 1911, and is named after the founder, Niels Juel Mortensen. It is a family owned company and the present manager is of the fourth generation.

The company's activities cover:ownership of fishing vessels, retail trade, food and textiles, provisioning, a ship agency and supply.

The main operation of the company is the shipping business, and it is in charge of three vessels: the deep sea trawler FN "Rasmus Effersae", the industrial trawler FN "Føroyingur", the industrial trawler/crabber FN "Gudmundur".

The company began research for deep sea crab 1993, in the area sout-heast of Faeroes.

The retail stores import most of their merchandise, and are always looking for new suppliers abroad.

We have a long tradition of provisioning local and foreign vessels, and in recent years we have extended this to include a ship agency and supply. In 1994 we established the new ship agency and supply department, called NIM-service.

N.J.Mortensen Ltd. employs about 30 people.
