| Vágar Airport is located on the island
Vágoy and in the immediate vicinity of Sørvágur, a town with a population of appr.
1,000. During World War II the airport was constructed by the British Armed Forces as a British military airfield. In 1963 the airfield was repaired by the Danish Civil Aviation Administration with reference to starting flight operations using smaller passenger aircraft during the summer period. destinations 2 carriers are operating 2 different types of aircraft. One using Boeing
737-500 with capacity of 132 seats, and the other BAe 146-200 with 86 seats, while a third
carrier is serving Reykjavík, Iceland and Glasgow, Scotland, with Fokker F-50 with 50
seats. A number of taxi flights are carried out mainly during the summer. Vágar airport is homebase for the local helicopter company serving the outlying islands. The company carries out appr. 20 flights a week from Vágar Airport with Bell 212. The Danish Airforce has use of the airport in transportation of food and staff to and from their installations on the islands. The airport also serves general aviation. These are mainly smaller aircraft making technical stops on their way over the North Atlantic. The runway on Vágar Airport has a length of 1,250m and a width of 30m. The runway pavement has transverse grooves to improve the breaking action. Runway 13/31 is equipped as a "non-precision approach" runway with ICAO code designation "3". Transportation to and from the airport is possible by taxi, bus or ferry. In connection with carriers departure/arrivals buses serve other parts of the country. The staff at Vágar Airport (Airport office, service and fire brigade) is about 30. Airport manager is Mr. Finnbogi Niclasen. |
