Vágur Municipality
FR-900 Vágur |
| Vágur is a coastal town in the southern
part of Suðuroy. The beautiful views include the fjord to the east, a open sea to the
west, impressive scenery in between high mountains and, last but not least, the rough
North Sea. Vágur is a large town by the islands' standards and thus offers a great deal of facilities to inhabitants and visitors alike; a sports hall next to the football grounds, a swimmingpool by the school, a High School and a clinic which offers the services of doctors, nurses and dentists. There is also a hotel, Post Office, banks and various shops. The port area, which is 14 m in depth, is situated on the northern part of the fjord. The port authorities can offer services of piloting (lods), water and fire-fighting, and in connection with the harbour there is a very modern fish factory and auctioneers for fish. |

| Speculators on potential oil
findings in the territory consider Vágur to be well-suited as an off-shore and supply
port. Future construction development for industry and warehouses in the area has been planned on an 18,000-m2 site on the southern side of the fjord. The tourist attractions indclude a wide variety of excursions during the summer. Amongst other things on offer is a boat trip on the old fishing boat, Jóhanna TG 326, west around the island to an area where birds flock and nest by the thousand, close to the world's steepest cliff, Beinisvørð. For this reason, the islanders call Vágur the pearl of the island. For visitors arriving by boat, Vágur is situated 61° 21' north and 06° 49' west. |
