From steel to industrial machines and equipment The cornerstone of the Finnish metal sector is the steel industry, which produces rolled steel qualities and processed steel products. This basic metal is exported to 60 countries, to demanding engineering manufacturers, the auto industry and the construction and shipbuilding industries. In addition to steel, Finland produces zinc, copper and nickel. The basic metals however, make up only 18 per cent of total metal industry exports. Finland is much better known as a manufacturer of advanced machinery and equipment. Probably the best known Finnish metal industry products are forestry machines and equipment. Ships for demanding conditions are also a Finnish specialty, concentrating on vessels for Arctic conditions and on large car ferries and luxury cruisers. Machines and equipment manufactured for the forest industry by Finnish companies range from harvesters to paper machines. In fact, Finland is one of the worlds leading paper machine manufacturers. In addition Finland is well known for various hoisting and material handling devices such as cranes and mining industry machines. All in all machines and equipment make up approximately 30 per cent and ships and other vehicles some 18 per cent of the metal industry's exports. |
