Investment in know-how The growth in high technology is clearly linked to Finland's willingness to invest in know-how. For years Finnish industry has sustained a high level of research and development. In 1994 investments in R&D grew by some 15 per cent on the previous year. In addition the educational system, especially the universities, has taken good care to raise standards of research and to put its findings to commercial use. An extensive network of technology centres has grown up around the universities, with the aim of transforming scientific research into production concepts. At present there are 8 such centres in Finland. There are also several smaller innovation centres. In Finland, investing in knowledge and high technology is considered vital to competitiveness. Technology is an important asset for all companies. This is the reason behind the constant drive to increase research and investment in it. |
