A traditional Nordic democracy
Finland is a traditional Nordic democracy with a high standard of equality. Finnish women were the first in Europe to get the right to vote, back in 1906. Yet the country has been independent only since 1917. On January 1st 1995 a new phase of history began when Finland joined the European Union.

Finland is a democracy, whose population is represented by the 200 members of the unicameral Parliament. Elections are held every four years. The largest parties in the present Parliament are the Centre Party, the Social Democrats and the Conservatives. The Government has executive power and must enjoy the confidence of Parliament. Finland also has an extensive and well functioning system of local democracy. The State is headed by the President of the Republic, chosen by direct popular vote every six years. The President is in charge of foreign policy. The office is at present held by Martti Ahtisaari.
