A new member of the European Union
Joining the European Union is a natural follow-up to the active and co-operative foreign policy Finland has always practiced. Thus Finland is continuing along the path which has made it known in the Nordic Council, the United Nations and its various organizations, and other international contexts.

Joining the EU will further strengthen the West European values and attitudes which have long been honoured in Finland. As a member Finland is expected to concentrate on social policy and environmental matters. Finland's strong trade links and cultural ties with Russia and the Baltic countries will in turn open up new opportunities for the Union.

Finland has 16 representatives in the EU Parliament, coming from six parties. The Unions financial and personnel policy is led by a Finnish Commissioner.
