Art and Culture
Artist’s Ally
Akureyri is culturally alive and the mid-point of this is a gully-shaped
street called Listagiliđ just off the main street. The Ally first
housed various manufacturers but slowly was replaced by arty kinds
of enterprises. The artists in the street got together in 1991 and
established a society called Gilfélagiđ, run by locals interested in
the development of art. The town council assisted as well by buying
some of the buildings for the purpose of encouraging and enlivening
arts and crafts. Artist’s Ally houses the Art College, various
galleries, work-shops for local and foreign artists, an architect’s
office as well as Café Karólína, an upmarket restaurant with
frequent contemporary art shows.
Summer Art Fest
One of the things that the society of Gilfélagiđ started was an
annual Art Fest which runs from mid-June through to the end of
August. The Fest organises various cultural happenings in the area
during this period.
Interesting Museums and Theatres
Akureyri has many fine museums, the main one being the local Folk
Museum. Here one can see a fascinating exhibition on the development
of the area since the time of settlement. The town has also produced
many famous writers, e.g. Davíđ Stefánsson (Davíđshús), Jón
Sveinsson (Nonnahús) and last but not least Mattías Jochumsson
(Sigurhćđir), who wrote the national anthem. Akureyri also has a
professional theatre and the Symphony Orchestra for the north is
located here.
