Economy and Society

The population of Akureyri is over 15.000. It is the largest town outside of the capital area of Reykjavík. Roads and other communications to and from the town have always been good as contact with the outside world has been constant, firstly with regard to trade and later with the increase of production of export produce and increased economy.

Living and lifestyles in Akureyri are very diverse. Industry takes a large section of the economy, with two head offices of the biggest fisheries in the country located in the town. Akureyri is the centre for shopping and services as well as rapid development in being an educational centre. It became a university town in 1987 but before that was well-known for its colleges and comprehensive schools. There are also colleges of Music and Art.

Akureyri Church is one of the main attractions in the town. The fact that it stands distinctly high on the hill, above the main centre bares witness to this. It was consecrated in 1940 and prides many precious possessions, such as the stained glass windows, depicting scenes from the life of Jesus. They come all the way from the Cathedral in Coventry, England which were removed during the Second World War (1943) in order to protect them from the air raids.
