Growth and Greenery The people of Akureyri were ahead of their fellow country men in growing things, both with regard to trees and gardens as well as vegetables. It was with a great deal of pride that the locals competed for the best gardens and vegetable patches. It is assumed this influence came from the Danish traders and still the very same potato patches are used which the Danish trader, Lever, made at the beginning of the 19th century. The Botanical Garden (Lystigarđur) in Akureyri, one of the jewels of the town, was opened in 1912 under the leadership of some women and is the northern most botanical garden in the world. There are examples of nearly all of Iceland’s flora as well as over 4000 other exotic species. Other usefull Akureyri links: |
