Hiking Trails in surrounding Akureyri Below are two interesting walks for the energetic. Along the banks of the river Eyjafjaršarį The walk starts from a small parking lot near the river Brunnį (south
of the airport). This old road used to be the national road over the
river Eyjafjaršarį, to get from one side of the valley to the other.
One walks along this road until you have crossed all the old bridges
and turn south along a gravel road which lies along the banks of the
river. The road passes the remains of the deserted farm called
Kaupangsbakki. The walk continues over another bridge over the river
Žverį, which leads into a riding track along the hot water pipes to
their source at Laugaland. The track now meets up with the tarred
road over another bridge crossing the same river. A short distance
away is a friendly green house called Vin, near Hrafnagil, which
serves coffee, cakes and ice cream. The ski-resort to the peak Strżta An unmarked hike, some stages very steep, where ice pick and cleats are necessary except during high summer. The hike starts at the ski-resort which follows the ski-lifts up to the ridge where the second lift is followed up to Mannshryggur. There is a choice of either going up the steep slope south of the ridge or climbing up the ridge on the east of Mt. Hlķšarfjall. From here the hike goes along the mountain side to the glacier Vindheimajökull, which lies northeast of Strżta and continues in the same direction until the peak is reached. Here one has a magnificent view of the world around on a lovely clear day. Other usefull Akureyri links: |
