The man mainly responsible for Dutch maps of Iceland, based in the beginning on those of Bishop Guðbrandur Þorláksson, was Joris Carolus. His map was the model for most maps of Iceland for 130 years until Johann Homann's map was published in 1761. Carolus' map was published more often, travelled further and was used as a model by others far longer than any of the other maps from that period.

Dutchman Carolus devoted his life to travelling, sailing and mapmaking and he left behind him a number of maps of northern Europe. His furthest expedition north reached Spitzbergen. In his youth he was a soldier and he lost a leg at the siege of Ostende and used a wooden leg for the remainder of his life. His friend the Icelander Jón Guðmundsson always referred to him as "Master Juris Peg-leg."
