    homann.jpg

Antique map of Jóhann Homann, 1761.
Homann's map of Iceland was based on the Knoffs' maps which were made upon the orders of the Danish king at the beginning of the 18th century but were never completed. It was decided to finish Knoffs work and Homann of Nuremberg, whose reputation was well known throughout Europe at that time, was asked to complete the task.

The map was published in 1761 under a long Latin name stating its origin. It was printed as a loose-leaf map and does not appear to have been published in a collection. There is only one known edition of the map, from 1761. However, others used it as a model for new, improved maps reaching a wider audience including cartographers, geographers and others involved with Iceland.
Actual size of map: 67 x 60 cm.
