Antique map of Žóršur
Žorlįksson, 1670.
Bishop Žóršur Žorlįksson was the grandson of Gušbrandur Žorlįksson,
the creator of the first map of Iceland in 1590. He was one of the most
learned men in Iceland and he had a keen interest in geography, astronomy
and cartography. Žóršur made three maps of Iceland, two dating from
1668 and the third from 1670. It includes a dedication to the Danish
king written in elaborate writing in the bottom left-hand corner along
with the coat-of-arms and crown. In the top right-hand corner there
is the Icelandic coat-of-arms, a crowned cod being borne aloft by two
birds.
The map was originally sent to the king but was later lent to Įrni Magnśsson
when he was sent as a representative to Iceland in 1702. Today the map
is preserved in the Įrni Magnśsson Institute in Copenhagen.
Actual size of map: 66 x 54 cm.
