Bustarfell Museum House
In the beautiful Hofsardalur, stands the old ancestral farm Bustarfell. This turf house with red gables and grass-grown roof is one of the oldest and best preserved farms of its kind in Iceland. It’s an ancient manor and one of the largest estates in Vopnafjordur.

The Bustarfell’s museum house preserves much history about Iceland and its people. A visit to the Museum at Bustarfell is a journey through the history of farming and changes in lifestyle from the beginning of the 18th century to the mid-20th century.

Museum Artifacts
Every year artifacts are added to the museum’s collection. Most of these donations are connected to the history of Vopnafjordur and rural life in former times.

In 1532 Bustarfell was bought by Arni Brandsson, son of the vicar at Hof in Vopnafjordur. His wife was Ulfheidur Thorsteinsdottir whose tombstone is preserved at the National Museum.

The Bustarfell family is descended from Arni and Ulfheidur and the farm has been inhabited continuously by this same family since 1532. The old farmhouse was inhabited until 1966 when the family moved into their present house.

The museum is open from 10 June – 10 Sept.
Open daily 10:00 – 18:00

"Croft-café" Hjaleigan Cafe-Bistro
In 2006, a visitor’s center was opened in order to improve services for museum guests.

In the past, small farms were formed from parts of larger farms and worked by crofters or tenant farmers living in small turf cottages. The name “Croft Café,, is in the spirit of this tradition.

The Croft Café is open daily, 12:00 – 18:00. Light refreshments are available.
