Fjalladyrd
Modrudalur |
Fjalladyrd - ModrudalurThe highest farm in Iceland is Modrudalur, 469 meters (almost 1.539 feet) above sea-level. This farm is surrounded by untamed nature of supreme beauty, unspoiled and undisturbed. For any traveler it is certainly well worth a visit to see this amazing place. A farm which has been inhabited from early settlement in Iceland and to this day, and has also served as a church site for centuries. Recreation near Mt. HerdubreidThe queen of Icelandic mountains, Mt. Herdubreid, is not far from Modrudalur, towering over the highlands with quiet dignity. This is one of the most famous mountains of Iceland and was made even more famous by painter Stefan Jónsson, from Modrudalur. He painted many pictures of the mountain from various points of view and during different seasons. He was a naive painter and some of his paintings are gaining monumentally in value year by year. His fathers painting, the alter piece in the church (built in 1949) is no less interesting and has attracted a lot of attention. In Modrudalur you will find:
We also have two accommodation lodges, which hold up to seven people each. Modrudalur has always been a resting place for people on long journeys, Icelanders and foreigners alike. We welcome you. Things to do The summer 2008 we will offer our guests to take a part in a short evening trip in the surroundings of Modrualur, to appreciate the wilderness and stark nature beauty of the Icelandic highlands. With luck we may encounter wild geese and birds as well as the surprising variety of plants that survive at this altitude. We will walk through a gorge to a waterfall and watch sunset over the highlands from a viewpoint. |
