Opportunities
in Iceland for foreign investors
Iceland has a lot to offer to both exporters and foreign investors.
It is situated mid-way between Europe and North America. It has one of the highest
living standards in the world. Trade relations and market access is favourable
on both sides of the Atlantic. The transport and telecommunications infrastructure
is well advanced. Icelanders pride themselves on being well educated and the
workforce is highly skilled. Labour costs are competitive. The public administration
is smaller than in most other countries which cuts the red-tape burden. The
country is uniquely endowed with hydro and geothermal energy and environmental
resources. A company wishing to use natural energy to produce clean products
in an unspoiled environment will indeed find unique opportunities in Iceland.
The country has excellent harbour and airport facilities. The major harbours
around the country remain ice free throughout the year. Icelandic shipping lines
operate coastal services around Iceland and regular shipping routes to the major
ports of Europe and North America. An Icelandic airline company offers direct
flights between Iceland and a number of European cities, as well as transatlantic
flights between several European and US cities with a stop-over in Iceland.
Other international airlines have also served the country from time to time.
Several airlines operate domestic routes across the length and breadth of the
country. All of the major cities and towns are served by a modern road system.
Last but not least, the overall economic environment is attractive to foreign
investors. Inflation has subsided to low European levels where it is likely
to stay, making investment decisions more effective. Attitudes have changed
with foreign investors now welcomed rather than merely accepted.
