The Snaefellsas Community was formally established in 1995 when the first family moved to Brekkubaer. The community was from the very beginning based upon ecological, spiritual and self-sustainable principles. The operation within the community started slowly, as people were searching how to create an income under new conditions. Many changes occurred in the community in 1997 when four families decided to build their own small houses within it. From then on one can say that there has been a steady progress in the structure of the community and the economy of the community members. Within the community one can now find a tour operation, a guesthouse, a campground and a small publishing house. The Snaefellsas Community became a member of Global Eco-Village Network in the summer of 2000. Environmental Policy The Snaefellsas Community has formed a special environmental policy, which is in full accordance with Local Agenda 21. It constitutes i.e. of the following:
Mr. Gudlaugur Bergmann and Ms. Gudrun G. Bergmann, Solbrekka, Gudlaugur eða Gudrun Ms. Gudridur Hannesdottir and Mr. Johann Thoroddsson, Skjolbrekka, Gudridur og Johann Mr. Ketill Sigurjonsson and Ms. Sveinbjorg Eyvindsdottir, Valabrekka, Ketill og Sveinbjorg Within the community there are several building sites available for further development.
