Althingi (Iceland’s parliament) passed a special law, the Act No. 100/1974, with subsequent amendments, on Hitaveita Suđurnesja, the company being a partnership owned by the local communities in the Sudurnes area and the Treasury. The objective of Hitaveita Suđurnesja is stated in Article 3 of the Act, as follows: To harness the geothermal energy at Svartsengi, and in other areas in the Reykjanes peninsula if this is considered viable. To build and run power stations, mains from the power plants and distribution networks in the area of its operation, and manage the sale of energy to consumers. To manage other types of utilization of geothermal steam and hot ground water.  Reykjanes – The Future Outdoor Area For the avid traveller we could point out ancient tracks, interesting trekking paths and various other attractive outdoor activities, e.g. special outdoor areas which present excellent opportunities to learn about geology and enjoy bird-watching, popular diversions such as horseback riding and sightseeing tours on land and sea, e.g. whale-watching, sea angling for both the initiated and the uninitiated, with some bird- and whale-watching on the side, and trout fishing in Lake Seltjörn. And, after all, that it is always a good idea to rest awhile and recharge your batteries in the Blue Lagoon. Eldborg An exhibition has been opened in “Gjáin” (the “Gorge”) where the local geology, geothermal activity and the harnessing of the energy from the bowels of the Earth are on show. State-of-the-art technical equipment has been installed and Gorge has been soundproofed so it is possible to put on many shows and play different sounds simultaneously. The visual display units are made of 42’’ plasma screens in the format 16:9, the new format for TV broadcasting. One bigger, rear projection screen is located in a dome at the end of Gorge. A sophisticated projector is used for this screen and it is possible to connect this projector to a digital MPEG film- and soundplayer, a super-VHS videoplayer and a computer. In the Gorge there is a digital sound system used to provide a range of sounds, e.g. for an erupting volcanic fissure, a model of an earthquake, etc. These sounds, and other natural sounds from Iceland, are stored in digital form and played in depending on the activities in the fissure at any given time. |
 Blue Lagoon The Blue Lagoon is a unique wonder of nature, a pool of natural mineral rich geothermal seawater in the middle of a lava field. The lagoon is rich in a unique natural combination of minerals. Blue-green algae and white Silica mud form light natural sediment on the bottom of the lagoon and give the lagoon its soft, milky, aquamarine color. The lagoon was formed when hot water from the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plant that formed due to heat exchange was discharged into the adjacent lava field. The Blue Lagoon Ltd. owns and operates the bathing facilities by the Blue Lagoon and the out-patient-clinic for psoriasis located by the Blue Lagoon. The firm’s fully owned subsidiary, the Blue Lagoon International LTD produces and markets the Blue Lagoon skin care products, based on active natural ingredients from the Blue Lagoon.
