The Highlandcentre Hrauneyjar Hrauneyjar is situated at the edge of the country´s most impressive, and active volcanic area. There is a accommodation for 100 people in 54 double rooms. This is a great place to have a conference. At the Highlandcenter there is a nice restaurant, shop and petrol service. The Highlandcentre Hrauneyjar is a Icelandic Farm Holidays member number 670. The area is a winter paradise for snowcatting and cross-country skiing and there are marked walking paths in the neighbourhood. It is so close to many magnificant places, it is f.ex. only 25 km to Veidivotn, 80 km to Thjorsarver, 25 km to Mt. Hekla. The Highlandcentre is open all the year. Daily from 7:30 to 24:00. Closed from 20. of December to 3. of January every year. From Hrauneyjar is a short distance to many of the most beautiful and popular tourist attractions in the highlands. The surrounding of Hrauneyjar is a paradise for those who wish to come in contact with the powerful forces of untamed Icelandic nature. The following are a few ideal destinations for day-trips to see the Highland of Iceland. Landmannalaugar is one of the most popular tourist spots in the highlands. It is a place of great contrasts of colour and form in the landscape, and among the attractions is a hot spring where you can bathe in the open air in all weathers. Hekla the volcano. Often called the "Queen" among Iceland's mountains, Hekla is one of the most active volcanos on earth. There are many walks on and around the mountain, and those who go all the way up - a long walk, but not difficult - are rewarded by an unforgettable view. Veidivotn are a magnificent highland oasis. The lakes are rich in trout that are believed to be from one of the oldest stocks in Europe. They vary in size, 3-6 pounders being common, and are known for their excellent taste, which many say is naturally spiced. The road from Veidivotn continues north to Jokulheimar on the west of Tungnaarjokull, one of the valley glaciers that "flows" from Vatnajokull. This is a good place to "get away from it all": the silence is often total, unbroken even by bird calls. Thjorsardalur is one of the attractions in the valley of the river Thjorsa is the Saga-Age Farmhouse, a replica built in 1974 of the farm at Stong which was destroyed by an eruption of Hekla in 1104. The ruins of Stong can also be seen, and a short walk further up the valley leads one to Haifoss, the second highest waterfall in Iceland and one of the most impressive. Only 25 km from the Highland center is a beautiful gorge called Gjain. The river that runs through Gjain gorge is called Rauda (Red River). This is a amazing place and worth to visit. Another beautiful river called Fossa, flows amongst the pseudocraters and it falls off the edge of a cliff and forms a two-level waterfall called Hjalparfoss. There you can find beautiful rock formations. Yet another waterfall, Dynkur, is an exceptionally beautiful sight. Thjorsarver is a broad expanse of well-vegetated wetlands flanking the river Thjorsa to the south of the glacier Hofsjokull and covering 150 km2. It is the largest breeding ground of the Pink-Footed Goose in the world; about 10,000 pairs arrive in the spring and up to 40,000 birds leave in the autumn. The area is protected by both Icelandic law and also the Ramsar Wetland Convention, which embraces about 90 member states. Thorisvatn is the second largest lake in the country, set in extraordinary surroundings of wasteland. Ideal place for angling. Another place of interest to anglers is Kaldakvisl, where brown trout and Arctic char are to be caught. For More Information |
