The Árnesinga Folk Museum is located at "The House", built in 1765 and one of the oldest surviving buildings in Iceland. Exhibits show local history and trace the different roles that The House has played during its long life

Husid - Folk Museum
Exhibitions in the House have been designed to show the building at its best. The museum is inevitably affected by its environment, and so part of the museum focusses on the House and its inhabitants. Several aspects of local history are also recounted.

One of Icelands oldes building
Húsið ("The House") in Eyrarbakki is one of Iceland's oldest buildings. Transported to Iceland in kit form in 1765, it is a timber structure, with a ground area of 20 x 14 ells (approx. 11 x 8 metres), and a total volume of 659 cubic metres, comprising two storeys and an attic.

The extension to the west of the House, known as Assistentahúsið (the Assistants' House), is connected via an annex. Built in 1881, it has a volume of 280 cubic metres. It originally housed the shop assistants of the Lefolii store.

Reconstructed after a disastours flood
The sea wall adjacent to the House was constructed after the disastrous Básendir flood of 1799, which swept away the whole hamlet of Básendir.

The house, the Assistants' House and the sea wall are all A-category protected structures, under the terms of the law on national monuments.
