About 470 people live in the district of Skútustađir in the Lake Mývatn area, of whom more than 200 live in the settlement of Mývatn. In earlier years the inhabitants mainly earned their living from agriculture and trout fishing. More recently there have been huge changes, beginning when Kísiliđjan Diatomite Plant was opened in the 1960s. It is the largest employer, but there is also work at the power plants at Bjarnarflag and Krafla. Tourism has long been a mainstay in the Mývatn area, with several hotels, restaurants, campgrounds and other firms offering tourist services. There are plans for building a sauna utilizing only geothermal heat, as has long been done in this area.

Mývatn is the fourth largest lake in Iceland with an area of 36.5 squere km. It lies 277 m above sea level, indented with small coves and with over 40 small islets. The lake is shallow, at most only five meters deep, and is home to a greater variety of ducks than anywhere else in the world. There is a rich bird life in addition to the ducks.

The natural beauty of the area is special and draws a stream of tourists in the summer, though it is not less beautiful in the winter. Popular tourist sites are the lava formations at Dimmuborgir, Mt. Hverfjall, Krafla, and the geothermal area east of Námaskarđur. The lake is drained by the Laxá, one of the best salmon fishing rivers in Iceland.

Mývatn is named for the swarms of midges of many kinds that are a vital part of the food chain, providing food for both birds and trout. Only the ones along the river bite. Despite the fact that Mývatn is in the highlands, the area has continued to be settled since the beginning, undoubtedly because of the importance of the ample supply of water.
