Raufarhofn village is by the plateau Melrakkasletta (transl. Arctic Fox Plain) the northernmost part of Iceland, almost on the arctic circle and closest to the midnight sun.

Raufarhofn is the northern most village in Iceland and inhabits about 250 people. The village has strong inseparable ties with the ocean, as its people have lived on fishing and fish processing all the way back to days of the first settlement.

Raufarhofn offers great outdoor activates. Melrakkasletta alone is an adventure for nature lovers. The Peninsula on which it is located is characterized by inlets, lagoons and driftwood piled or strewn along its beaches.

The north arctic circle is only 3 km away from Raufarhofn and that gives a unique opportunity in bird watching in the area. There is a great variety of bird life, in the area both on Melrakkasletta plain and at Raufarhofn. Kottjorn pond, in the centre of the village is a bird sanctuary.

The area abounds in many species of breeding and visiting birds, a real paradise for birdwatchers, especially north of the village. The region requires a few days, if people want to enjoy it to its fullest, hiking, fishing and sightseeing.

How to get to Raufarhofn, north east Iceland
If you want to fly to Raufarhofn you can book your flight through Air Iceland and fly via Akureyri or take a flight to the Raufarhofn airport with charter airlines like Eagle Air.

By car the distance from the capital is 634 km if you take the tunnel of Whale bay (Hvaldjardargong). Myvatn is around 160 km away and Husavik 154 km. Kopasker if you take the Oxafjardarheidi only 91 km away and via Melrakkasletta there is even less distance, only 55 km from Raufarhofn and to Thorshofn is 71 km.
