The Reykjanes Nature Reserve

Embracing some 300 square kilometres of natural wilderness traversed by trails hundreds of years old, the Reykjanes Nature Reserve offers a challenging choice of hikes for walkers of all abilities. Leaving Grindavík, the road snakes its way east along the coast towards Krísuvík, passing the deserted fishing station at Selatangar, one of the best surviving examples of its kind left in Iceland, and the cliffs at Krísuvíkurberg, home to some of the largest colonies of seabirds found anywhere in Iceland.

Just past the picturesque church at Krísuvík, the road branches. To the left, the route lies north towards Reykjavík, passing the dark, brooding lakes Grćnavatn and Kleifarvatn and hot springs at Seltún, while the fork to the right continues east across the vast Herdísarvíkuhraun lava field to eventually join Route 1, Iceland's main Ring Road. Whatever the option chosen, allow plenty of time, for this is an exeperience best enjoyed at leisure.
