and Development Agency - TOURISM Vatnsleysuströnd ![]() Located less than 35 km from Reykjavík, just north of the main road, Vatnsleysustrond is the ideal place at which to begin a visit to the Reykjanes peninsula. Built in 1891, Kálfatjartnarkirkja is Iceland's largest rural church and today a listed building, the interior of which has been restored to its original form. The bracing walk up the hill from Kálfatjörn, the pond from which the church takes its name, is rewarded by one of the most panoramic views found anywhere in Reykjanes, as well as a close-up look at Staðarborg, an impressive stone ruin which probably once served as a sheep pen. Taking less than an hour, the walk is well worth the effort, and the stone cairn at Kálfatjörn from where it start marks the route of the centuries-old trail between Hafnarfjörður and Reykjanes. Golfers may wish to test their skills on the small but tricky local course, while the nearby village of Vogar offers an outdoor swimming pool and excellent new motel. For hikers, there is the option of a walk across the hill Stapi, said to be haunted by a headless ghost, continuing past the vantage point at Grímshóll and down to the town of Njarðvík. For the more energetic, there is the further option of a 6-7 hour hike across the neck of Reykjanes to Grindavík, one of Iceland's leading fishing ports. Alternately, there is a shorter circular walk which leads to Grímshóll, returning to Vogar via the spectacular Háabjalla fissure.
