Aquarium and Museum of Natural History in Vestmannaeyjar
The museum is divided into three areas, the mounted birds and fish, the aquarium and the rock and mineral display. Many of the things on display in the museum have been collected and donated by individuals. Most of the fish in the aquarium have arrived there due to the care and interest of seamen. They have always showed a great amount of interest in the aquarium which proves that not only are they fishermen at heart but also nature enthusiasts.

Most of Iceland´s nesting birds are mounted and on display in the museum including a collection of their eggs. There are also quite a few of the fore mentioned waylaid birds, several of which were the first ones of their species to be sighted in Iceland. Also included are several speciments found commonly in Iceland but that have unusual coloring or markings, for example the totally dark colored Guillemont, which is the only known one in existence.

Also in this area of the museum there are mounted crabs, fish and other sea animals, many of which are very rare such as the Deepsea Angler and the Atlantic Football-fish, deepsea fish that are found at depths of 1000 to 2000 meters.

All the main species of market fish that are caught off the coast of Iceland are to be found in the 12 tanks located in the aquarium. Included are crabs, polyps, starfish and shellfish found in these waters. The 12 aquarium tanks hold seawater that is at a temperature of 6°C (43°F). The water is pumped up from a 30 meter deep well that is only a few meters from the building. The water is pure and clean due to filtering through sand and lava.

The beautiful collection of rocks and minerals was donated to the museum by Unnur Pálsdóttir and Sveinn Guðmundsson. The collection is said to be one of the best in the country and includes over one thousand Icelandic rocks that Sveinn has spent many years collecting throughout the country. Due to the limited space available.

During the summertime visitors of the Museum can see on the screen in the Museum life pictures from a puffin colony.
