The story of the Icelandic Yulemen (jólasveinar) has been with Icelanders
for a long time. Also their parents, the trolls Grýla and Leppalúði,
but they snatched children and ate them. They are all a part of
Icelandic tradition. Nobody knows exactly how they came into being.
On the night of the 12th of December all Icelandic children, who
belives in Santa Clause, puts their shoes out in the window because
this is the night when the first lad comes from their mountain dwelling.
Then the Yulelads come one by one each night. The first to arrive
is Sheep-Cot Clod and he leaves again on Christmas day. Other Yulelads
are; Gully Gawk, Shorty, Ladle Licker, Pot Scraper, Bowl Licker,
Door Slammer, Skyr Gobbler, Sausage Swiper, Window Peeper, Door
Sniffer, Meat Hook. The last one is Candle Begger and he arrives
on Christmas Eve and goes back to the mountains on the 6th of January,
the thirteenth Day of Christmas.
