What gives,?
Well, in Reykjavík the markup is lower, thanks to reasonably priced retail space and lower overhead. Add to this the 15% tax-free refund for tourists - off a minimum purchase of ISK 4,000 (near $45 US) - and you may wind up with some excellent buys indeed. Incidentally, price tags inn Iceland always include sales tax.

Q: What is VAT?
A: VAT is a value added tax which is included in the purchase price.  This makes up to 19,68% of the price.  The tax is used for social purposes in Iceland and as a foreign resident you can hence, claim this tax back and hence, shop TAX-FREE in Iceland.
