The West Fjords are Iceland's outpost to the northwest, and the westernmost point of Europe, with sheer bird cliffs rising out of the sea and mountains beautifully wrought and etched by Ice-Age glaciers. For centuries, life there revolved around harvesting the ocean and waging continous battle with the forces of nature. Yet deep within the narrow valleys and jagged fjords, sublime nature and the relics of vanished settlements whisper to those who have ears to hear their tale. Steep bluffs, flourishing fishing villages bustling with life, deserted settlements and remote farms: all these characterize the West Fjords.
