Thingvellir Iceland’s Natural Heritage

Thingvellir, “Parliament Plains,” is treasured and revered by the Icelanders for both the beauty and grandeur of the lava landscape.  It has also served as the cradle of Icelanders national identity.

Beneath the natural walls of its majestic chasm, overlooking fertile plains and the largest lake in the country, the settlers of Iceland proclaimed their independent republic at Thingvellir in AD 930, and founded the democratic parliament that is the oldest national assembly in the world today.

Now Thingvellir is a protected national park and is a popular attraction for both Icelandic and foreign tourists. Thingvellir is a meeting-point for the spirit of history, the forces that have shaped the land, and the gentle handwork of nature with its message of peace and harmony.
