Vísir ltd - fishing and fish processing company in Iceland
Vísir h/f is a fishing and fish processing company that stresses line-fishing and salt fish production. The company employs 100 people on land and 100 at sea.
Vísir hf. was established in 1965. Its founder, Páll P. Pálsson, and his family own and operate the enterprise.

Fishing fleet
The company’s fleet consists of seven line vessels of 200-300 gross tons each. The fishing fleet has the same objective as processing operations on land, which is to increase the value of the catch. The company also cooperates with smaller fishing companies on obtaining fish for processing on land.

Fish factories
Vísir h/f processes cod, tusk, and ling into wet-salted products, both fillets and split fish, as well as producing frozen catfish. By-products include cod cheeks and cod fillets, cod faces, cod sound, migas, and dried cod heads.
Vísir has its headquarters in Grindavík, but it also operates its own fish processing plants in Thingeyri and Djupavogur.

Fish production
In 2000, production consisted of 5000 tons of wet-salted fish, 1500 tons of frozen herring, and 15,000 barrels of salted herring. Most of its production, which is in the SPIG category, goes to markets in Spain, Italy, and Greece.
Line-fish is in great demand in these markets because of its excellent quality.
The HACCP quality system is employed in daily production and quality control.
