Pioneers in whale watching
The Moby Dick whale watching in Keflavik pioneered in southwest Iceland and is the only such company run by a woman. Starting from scratch, Helga Ingimundardottir, a local tour guide begun the operation in co-operation with a local captain and owner of a small boat in 1994. The vessel Moby DickThe popularity of the trips caused the company to grow and now owning a 160-ton steel-hull boat, the Moby Dick, Helga takes an ever-increasing number of whalespotters out daily during the operation season.,carrying up to 90 passengers. The M/S Moby Dick comes equipped with a promenade deck and foredeck for optimum viewing Onboard wind/water proof and warm clothing provided for FREE. Transfers via Bue lagoon or drop off at airport.The boat trip takes approximately three hours, and departures are daily from April - October. The Moby Dick team offer hotel pick up transfers at your Reykjavik hotel. On the way home, weather-beaten sailors have the option of indulging in a hot soak at the stunning Blue lagoon or we can drop off at the airport for your afternoon flight. Upto 100% Sightings!The whales most commonly seen are Minke, Humpback and Orca. Very often the White beaked Dolphins come bowriding alongside the boat. Sightings have often been upto 100% per month. On our short sailing to the whales, we follow the coast line and so you can enjoy the rich birdlife in the lava cliffs. Frequently seen in the whale watching area are puffins, gannets, guillemots, arctic skua, arctic tern and other species. Participate in our Research.We registrate sightings and position of all marine mammals spotted and deliver reports to the Icelandic Marine Research Institute. Our chief guide Ph.D. Marianne H. Rasmussen from Denmark, initiated a photo-identification project of White beaked Dolphins in 1997 in our whale watching area.
