It's all about WHALES - Watch and learn
The Whale Museum, an educational facility on whales and the marine environment in the North Atlantic, is located in Husavik (2.400 inhabitants), in the North of Iceland, which is also considered to be one of Europe’s No.1 whale watching locations. Founded in 1997 and a non-profit organization since 2004, the Museum now forms, in an interesting and attractive way, the educational component to the whale watching tours departing Husavik during the summer time. What to expect in a whale museumThe exhibition provides detailed information on the whale’s habitat, its biology and ecology, introduces in detail the species occurring in the North Atlantic, and informs about whale strandings, natural history and the whaling history in Iceland. The facility offers 1.600m˛ of exhibition space, which enables the presentation of several life-sized skeletons. These skeletons originate of stranded whales and are processed locally. Documentary films in English on whaling in Iceland and the global controversy of whaling and whale watching will further enhance the visit. And for the little guests: Join the yellow submarine and have fun… Whale exhibition opening hoursThe Whale Museum opens daily from 9 – 19 during the months June-August and in May and September daily from 10 – 17. It is also possible to visit us in winter time by arrangement. The Whale Museum Staff is a small group of well trained people that offer information and, upon request, guided tours in English, German and Icelandic; a service that is included in the admission fee. People with other Nationalities can, in most cases, be provided with self-guide booklets. The Museum operates a souvenir section with emphasis on regional products and products made in Iceland that refer to marine mammals, sea birds and Icelandic nature. Welcome to the whale museumMore than 150.000 people have visited and enjoyed the Whale Museum since its establishment. What had once been the abandoned slaughterhouse in town is now one of the most visited places in the north of Iceland. Combining the observation of whales in the wild with a visit of the Whale Museum will guarantee an unforgettable experience. Working with whales...The Whale Museum operates a volunteer program, offering positions from May – September. The program is especially suitable for biology students and/or students in related courses that would like to gain working experience abroad. Included in the program is the participation in our whale research project. For further information, please E-Mail us. |
