The district is situated in the Northwestern part of Siauliai County, along the border with Latvia. The administrative seat is in Naujoji Akmene. Akmene is another city, and the more important towns are Venta and Papile. The major industry in the district is construction materials. Most industry is located in Naujoji Akmene. The most significant are Akmenes Cementas (Cement), Ventos statybines medziagos (Construction Materials), a bakery, the state Ecology Laboratory and others. Tourism, including local areas, is being promoted. There are a lot of sports clubs. The district boasts 136 cultural landmarks. Considered most significant are the 18th century Siaudine Church grounds, the early 20th century Akmene Church, the monument to the historian S. Daukantas in Papile and the late 19th century Vieksniai Water Mill. Museums of interest are the former Papile home of the historian S. Dakantas, the memorial to the founder of Lithuanian aviation, A. Griskevicius, the earliest pharmacies in Vieksniai and the writer Lazdynu Peleda's farmstead-museum in Paragiai village. The Venta River and its tributaries run through the district. The Venta Districtal Park is the most suitable for recreation. Areas of unspoilt nature are the Kamanos Nature Reserve, Pavirvyciai Botanical Reserve, and the Girkanciai, Karniskiai and Purviai Botanical Reserves and cranberry fields. The town of Akmene was founded at the beginning of the 16th century. For many years the town has served as the districtal centre. Now most of the town's commerce is run by small enterprises in trade and services. There are a lot of beautiful places worth visiting in Akmene district. |
