Alytus County consists of the towns of Alytus (pop. 77,000) and Druskininkai (pop. 22,000) and the region municipalities of Varena (pop. 12,000) and Lazdijai (pop. 6000).

The County belongs to the Dzukija ethnographical region, which borders on Poland and Belarus, with the other Lithuanian counties of Vilnius, Marijampole and Kaunas.

The largest Lithuanian river, the Nemunas, flows through Alytus County. There are several hundred lakes which attract thousands of nature lovers in both winter and in summer. It is the most wooded part in the whole country, with 44% covered by forests.

Roads lead to every part of the county. The track of the European standard railway (Lithuania - Poland: route Kaunas - Scstokai) will cross Alytus county. A modern international freight station will be built.

The center of Alytus County is the town of Alytus, the biggest cultural and commercial center of South Lithuania. This sixth largest Lithuanian town is situated on both banks of the Nemunas. The town is first mentioned in historical sources in 1377. Since 1963 (after the decision to make Alytus the center of south Lithuania) it has developed quickly. There are over two thousand joint stock companies, factories and plants (champagne plant, cotton mill, etc.).

100,000 people are treated in Druskininkai nursing-homes, which are famous for their balneological and mud therapies and the pleasant climate and are open all year. The town's guests are always impressed by the wonderful pine forests, serenity and carefully arranged surroundings and pleasant climate.

Lazdijai, a recently developed town (though mentioned in historical sources about 500 years ago) is full of recreation zones (especially water tourism). The National Park of Dzukija, in the Veisiejai region and the Meteliai Region parks boast charming landscapes.

Varena was founded in 1862 and has no industry, but it is especially rich in nature reserves. The most worthy are the Cepkeliai reservation, in Glebas, Spengla, the Spengla hydrographical reservation, the geological reserve in Akmuo and in Taurupis geomorphological reserve.

The native plains, the graceful bends of the Nemunas, the clear lakes and the sonorous speech of the Dzukija people will leave the visitor with a lasting impression of beauty.
