The Service was founded in 1958. The forest area covers 50,000 ha, or one-third of the Anyksciai district. The proportions of different tree species in the forests administered by the service are as follows: pine 48%; fir groves 21%; birch groves 22%; aspen woods 4%; oak woods and ash groves 1%; others 4%. The Service's activities include the reclamation and protection of forests, the planting and care of saplings, the building of forest roads, hunting, the production and sale of wood and wood processing. Each year, the Service plants 160 ha of trees, raises 300 ha of saplings, cuts down and sells more than 70,000 m3 of wood. Timber, wood for paper manufacture and firewood are the main products, and Scandinavian technology is used in the production. Two packaging lines have been installed in the shop for the production of small-sized wood, and intermediate products for europallets are cut there. The Service also has Swedish equipment for pole production. Products are prepared for export. The Service organizes commercial game hunting for foreign guests and Lithuanian hunters. The area in which commercial hunting is carried out amounts to 4900 ha, and the main animals hunted are deer, elk, roe-deer, wild boars, foxes and wolves. Berries and mushrooms abound in the forests, and berry-picking and mushroom gathering are popular among local people and visitors alike. |
