In 1996, the Lithuanian Automobile Club (LAC) celebrated its 70th anniversary. The statutes of the LAC were registered on 20th March 1926. Its initial goals were to control motor vehicle traffic in the country and to maintain links with similar clubs in other states. The LAC contributed a lot so that the country's best motorists could make Lithuania known in Europe and the entire world. Thanks to the club's efforts, hundreds of rallies, cross-country races and circular-course motor races were organized. An indication of the results is the fact that within three years, on 13th October 1929, the Lithuanian Automobile Club became a full member of the International Automobile Federation (FIA). Contracts were concluded with automobile clubs of more than thirty states. After Lithuania lost its independence in 1940, the club's activity became less intensive. Its main functions were taken over by the Lithuanian Motorists' Society. The society rendered the country's motorists considerable assistance in the maintenance and servicing of vehicles, in the organization of motor sports and in the sphere of professional training. Motorists of the other countries under the "guardianship" of the Soviet Union were genuinely envious of their Lithuanian colleagues who sought every possible way of carrying on the activity of the club founded back in 1926. Many Lithuanians won numerous titles and prizes in motor racing championships in the former Soviet Union and Europe. The LAC gained new strength after Lithuania regained its independence in 1990. At present, the club is headed by Stasys Brundza, a famous motor racer who is the champion and a prize winner of many competitions held in the former Soviet Union and in Europe. His objective is to revitalise the old traditions of the clubs by combining the wisdom of grey heads with the enthusiasm of young hearts. Naturally, the restoration of the club's membership of the FIA is his prime goal. Thanks to the efforts of the club and its president, a motor rally for the President's Cup was held last year. Organized again after a break of 65 years and titled "Around Lithuania", this rally became a memorable event for all motorists in the country. The club's activities are many and varied. It is not restricted merely to the organization of sports competitions. Having acquired considerable experience, Lithuanian motorists wish to engage in all kinds of co-operation and mutual assistance. We are always open-hearted and sincere people. |
