When the independence of Lithuania was restored, it became necessary to increase product exports from the country immediately. Lithuanian companies such as "Achema" in Jonava, Kedainiai chemical plant (at present Lifosa) producing mineral fertilizers, Akmene cement plant "Akmenes Cementas" were well known in the Western market at that time. A stevedoring company "Bega" was established in 1992 in the port of Klaipeda. It is a private company specializing in handling fertilizers (liquid, bulk, bagged), cement and timber. In 6 years, the volume of cargo handled increased from 10,000 tons in 1992 up to 1,260,000 tons in 1997. Bega's development and investment program foresees a turnover of 5.5-6.0 million tons after the year 2000 and the establishment of additional working places. Four specialized high loading capacity terminals for liquid fertilizers, bulk product and cement exports and bulk product imports will be in operation. High capacity tanks, warehouses and storage will be available in the terminal to ensure fast loading of vessels of 30,000 tons and larger. In 1998 the company employed 300 employees. The port territory covers over 12 ha. There are 6 berths with a total length of 1025 m and a draught of 12 m. In October 1996, a pier with a length of 200 m and a draught of 12.5 m went into operation. The construction of a second pier with a length of 240 m and a draught of 14 m is planned. Bega is able to receive 8 ships of different sizes at a time and load them with different cargoes.

The technological and transport equipment available on the quay and the areas for storage make it possible to load vessels with up to 25,000 tons of liquid, from 2000 to 15,000 tons of bulk, 3000 tons of bagged fertilizers, from 1500 tons to 14,000 tons of cement, and 2000 cubik meters of timber per 24 hours, and to discharge various bulk products from ships at the rate of 500 tons per hour. Bega distinguishes itself by reliable technological equipment and high quality handling. The handling operations are carried out 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at all seasons of the year. For this reason the services of this comparatively young company are used not only by Lithuanian but also by exporters and importers from other countries.
