Birzai Forest Enterprise (BFE) is located in the very northern part of Lithuania. The BFE forests are located in two administrative regions, Birzai and Pasvalys, with a total area 273,000 ha. BFE manages 35,000 ha of state forests and 24,000 ha of private forest or forest expected to become private. BFE carries out combined forestry, growing of seedlings, afforestation, thinning, cutting, sawing of timber, building of forest roads, draining, guarding, etc. Soft deciduous tree species are the most common; birch, aspen, black alder, grey alder. These species make up the 50% coniferous, spruce and pine forests, 30% hard deciduous, ash and oak forests, and 17% total stands volume. Most stands are mixed, with 2-4 tree species. The average volume is 183 m3 per hectare. We are paying a great deal of attention to reforestation because BFE soils are very fertile. BFE reforests 130 ha or 30% of the cut-over areas and leaves 70% of the cut-over areas annually to re-grow naturally. To access the timber, BFE builds 30 km of new roads every year. In terms of production volume BFE is the biggest forest enterprise in Lithuania and produces 160,000 m3 or 4.6 m3 per hectare yearly. Production is now 70% types of logs and 30% types of stems in the forest. We use a Scandinavian Valmet forwarder and a Husquarna chain-saw for producing timber. For transporting timber we use Russian KaMaz trucks as well as Finnish Sisu. We sell all timber production to Lithuanian enterprises except pulpwood, which we export to Scandinavia because there is no mill in Lithuania that processes pulpwood. Because there is no market for thin logs BFE produces pallets in its sawmill. BFE also produces sawn timber for construction. We saw 35,000 m3 of round-wood yearly. We export pallet and building timber to Germany, Denmark and Holland. Timber residuals we reduce and use for fueling power plants. BFE employs 435 workers. |
