The Oil Exploration Expedition was established in 1964 to develop oil prospecting and exploration activities in the republic. It was named the Gargzdai State Oil Geology Enterprise in 1991 and registered as AB Geonafta in 1995. Up to 1993 the company was the only enterprise in Lithuania carrying out exploration of oil-bearing structures, evaluation of reserves and oil production. About 400 employees work in the company, of whom 62 have university-level education and 100 have pre-university education. During the past 32 years of operations, exploration has continued with 20,000 km of seismic line geophysical investigation, identifying 21 prospective structures for further exploration and deep drillings. A total of 218 deep drill-holes and 171 structural holes have been drilled, resulting in the discovery of 19 oil fields, 10 of which are commercially significant. The company estimates a 7.9 million tons potential production from existing wells. In 1990, test oil production was started from separate wells and up to 1st January 1996, 0.46 million tons of oil had been recovered. Starting in 1996, AB Geonafta has carried out oil sales in Lithuania and oil exports were started in 1995. Oil exploration activities are performed in the Plunge Licence Area. On special orders, drilling operations are carried out by the company to investigate the reserves of geothermal energy in Devonian and Cambrian water-bearing horizons. Sealed structures suitable for gas storage are explored and drilling is begun. In 1993-95, two joint ventures with foreign partners, UAB Genciu Nafta and UAB Minijos Nafta, were established for oil prospecting, exploration and production in the awarded Licence Areas. At present AB Geonafta carries out the following activities:
a. Field operations using explosives and the Geophysical Data Acquisition System "Progress" (96-channel). b. The weathering zone study carried out by velocity microprofiling and shallow refraction using the 12-channel digital seismograph Bison 9000. c. Quality Control and Preproducing (SDS-3 for PC processing system). d. Structural interpretation of 2 D seismic data. e. Qualified consultations of specialists on the performance of seismic and log works in the Baltic region. 2. Drills wells at different depths for various aims: a. Oil prospecting and exploration. b. Oil production. c. Structural. d. Geothermal. e. For other specific purposes. 3. Tests and investigates oil-bearing and water-bearing formations, estimates oil reserves in oil fields. 4. Performs investigation of oil-bearing formatons with the help of high-accuracy gauges. 5. Carries out oil production. |
