Kietaviskiu gausa is the newest modernised greenhouse farm in Lithuania. The company is located in Kietaviske, near Elektrenai, eight kilometres from the Kaunas-Vilnius Highway. The first winter greenhouses were built and commissioned in 1986. The main project allows for the construction of 48 ha of greenhouses devoted to growing flowers and vegetables, with heat supplied by the Lithuanian Power Station by means of a 6-km pipeline. About 13 ha of glass greenhouses, erected in serried ranks and covered with transparent laminated pellicle, warehouses, refrigerators for 500 tons of harvest, mechanical workshop, waste water treatment, and a station for the removal of iron from the water have been built so far. Up-to-date technology from Holland, involving plant growing in rockwool with a computerised dripp irrigation system, is used in the greenhouses. 4500 tons of vegetables, i.e. 26% of the total amount of vegetables harvested in Lithuanian greenhouses, and 600,000 roses are picked each year. All the harvest is sold in Lithuania. Construction of 3 ha of new greenhouses is to be completed in the near future and 80% of the estimated work has already been carried out. The enterprise is carried out in close co-operation with the following firms from abroad: Agrotech Didam B.V., Rijk Zwaan, Kemira and Hydro, Grodanija. The company owns 73 ha, has authorised capital of USD 7 million, and employs 270 people. |
