Kaunas County is situated in the very centre of the Republic of Lithuania, bordered by the counties of Alytus, Vilnius, Panevezys, Siauliai, Taurage and Marijampole. Kaunas County is comprised of the six districts of Kaunas, Kedainiai, Kaisiadorys, Jonava, Prienai, Raseiniai, and two cities Ñ Kaunas and Birstonas. The county covers an area of 8140 km2. Though the present population numbers 760,000, in recent years there has been a decrease in population and therefore a decrease in the number of households.

Kaunas County is an area where industry and agriculture have been intensely promoted: during the first three months of 1997, the county's industrial companies took in over 707 million litas (40.9% of production sold in Lithuania and 59.1% to other countries). During the same period, food products sold for 156 million litas (84.87% in Lithuania and 15.13% to other countries). The county's unemployment rate has considerably decreased.

The city of Kaunas is the administrative seat and industrial centre of Kaunas County. The city has always been famous for the production of fabrics and garments, as is also the town of Raseiniai. The towns of Jonava and Kedainiai are home to large companies involved in the chemical industry, mainly in the production of mineral fertilizers. The aircraft industry has been developed in the town of Prienai. The district of Kaisiadorys boasts a hydro-accumulative electric power station, the only one of its kind in all the Baltic States.

Kaunas County is an area of plains and gentle, rolling hills and winding rivers, with the county's towns strung like colourful beads along the Nemunas, Neris, Nevezis and Dubysa Rivers. The county offers beautiful scenery, with some areas protected as nature preserves.

Located in the heartland of Lithuania, the county has good roads and highways running in all directions. The Via Baltica highway crosses the county, as do railway lines, with a rail terminal and airport operating in Karmelava. The Nemunas River is a convenient and vital waterway, open to passenger and cargo traffic by boat.

Kaunas County is a combination of industrial opportunities and natural beauty that invite the development of tourism and commerce. It is no surprise, then, that the Free Economic Zone of Kaunas is being established.

The County administration is headed by Kazys Starkevicius, assisted by Assistant Superior Juozas Yla and Secretary Valerijonas Senvaitis. Separate departments are still being established, with plans calling for hiring 50 employees.
